This is a follow-up to my post, Butyrate Is Good For The Colon, But You Can’t Get It There By Eating Butter, where I discussed Sammy Pepys’ claim that butter was good for the colon. Pepys is the author of the book Fat Is Our Friend.
I was having a Twitter conversation with Sammy Pepys. He said:
Butter; also a good source butyrate which aids digestion & works against colorectal cancer. https://t.co/GYtTNl1Tb6 https://t.co/RjMbG8Blps

I asked him how eating butter gets butyrate into the colon, since it’s absorbed before it gets to the colon. This link he posted says to eat starch and fiber. Another link he sent me also said to eat starch and fiber. In fact, he agrees:

1/ SCFA's like butyrate/acetate/propionate are produced in large intestine by bacterial fermentation of dietary fiber. Agreed!— Fat is our Friend (@fatisourfriend) June 2, 2016

Another link he sent me was a study on mice that did not use butter but used a supplement, a sodium salt of butyrate in solid form. The last tweet he sent me said to use butter enemas:
@fanaticcook I'm told reliably that grass-fed butter enemas are becoming fashionable in Germany for more direct colon treatment:)

He never said how eating butter provides butyrate to the colon. In fact, it doesn’t.
So, he says … Take a butter enema, haha.
To Sammy Pepys, or to whoever wrote this book, colon cancer is a joke. I’m having a hard time getting past that this morning.
Butter enemas–remind me of the film “Last Tango in Paris,” w/ its memorable use if a stick of butter…. And re colon cancer, it’s no joke, as you point out. I know several people (men & women, young & old) who have died from it.
