Even omnivores or people who eat meat and other animal foods may become deficient in vitamin B12 as they age because of decreased absorption. Eating meat does not cure a deficiency. People over 65, no mater what their diet, should supplement.

Depending on the definition used, between 3% and 43% of community-dwelling older adults have vitamin B12 deficiency based on serum vitamin B12 levels.
