In a closed-door meeting in December, the 2015 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee approved removal of lean meat from proposed healthy diet recommendations. That sparked criticisms from many in the meat industry, who wondered about the future implications of the move.
“The committee’s removal of nutrient-dense lean meat from a healthy dietary pattern is stunning,” says North American Meat Institute president and chief executive officer Barry Carpenter.
