What is going on here?
In 2018, one in 44 children aged 8 years was estimated to have ASD, and prevalence and median age of identification varied widely across sites.
Of the sites they studied, California had the highest prevalence. In the past, for many years, New Jersey had that honor. Boys outnumbered girls 4 to 1, but that has always been the case:
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) was 4.2 times as prevalent among boys as among girls.
