Lithium is an element, a mineral. We need trace amounts of minerals like zinc (Zn) or iron (Fe) or iodine (I) to survive. Studies are revealing we probably need a trace amount of lithium too.
Here’s lithium (Li) in the Periodic Table. It’s in the very first column, second box down, right above sodium (Na) and potassium (K).

Nutritional studies in mammals have indicated [lithium’s] importance to health, leading to a suggestion that it be classed as an essential trace element.
I came across the following review this morning. Lithium is still receiving support in the scientific community for its effect on (especially, but not limited to) the nervous system:

Lithium is not yet generally recognized as a trace element but several lines of evidence make it a strong candidate [352]. For instance, long-term low-dose exposure to lithium exerts anti-aging capabilities and unambiguously decreases mortality in animal models [353]. In humans, epidemiological studies indicate an inverse correlation between lithium concentration in drinking water and mood, depression and suicide rates [354], amongst other psychiatric conditions [355]. In a study that compared elderly bipolar patients (who exhibit a higher risk for dementia) who had received chronic lithium treatment, with bipolar patients who had not received lithium, it was shown that the prevalence of the treated group was equivalent to the general, age-comparable population, whereas the non-lithium-treated patients had an incidence of dementia that was six times greater, i.e. 5 % vs. 33 %, respectively [356]. In another study it was shown that lithium treatment resulted in an increase in volumes of the hippocampi in both hemispheres compared to an unmedicated group, an effect that was apparent even after a brief treatment period of about 4 weeks on average [357].
Importantly, intake of lithium not only in standard therapeutic but also in trace doses reduces the risk for dementia, suicide, and other behavioural outcomes, suggesting an pharmacological interference with key regulators of these pathological processes [358]. So, lithium naturally regulates critical cell signalling pathways and a lack of lithium in the diet can therefore cause increased disease risk.
Intake of drinking water with comparable low lithium concentrations were found to be inversely correlated with all-cause mortality in a large epidemiological study in Japan [353].
They say that some spring waters contain about 1 mg/liter:
Traces of lithium can be ingested in some geographic areas by drinking local tap water or otherwise by consuming commercially available, mineral-rich spring waters, containing suitable concentrations of around 1 mg lithium per litre. Hence microdose lithium intake by means of one or two glasses of such water a day is not only of potential therapeutic value (see below) but also a safe preventive measure, by means of simply reducing an intake-deficit of an important novel trace element.
That 1mg/liter is a lot. I haven’t seen any water that contains that much. Have you? I first wrote about lithium in 2015: An RDA For Lithium? On The Order Of 1 mg/day?. I found about a tenth of a liter in some bottled waters, those that listed an amount:

Our food contains lithium in trace amounts, as long as the soil the food is grown in does. But no one is checking right now.
So no one’s checking the soil or water. Given the increasing incidence of dementia and Alzheimer’s, as well as bipolarity (for which insufficient bodily lithium is blamed), is anything going to happen? My father was badly bipolar–it would be nice if we had known then of a way to prevent it. It was awful.

Manic-depression, or bipolar disorder, is not caused by a lithium deficiency. If that was true, you could cure manic-depression by giving lithium, like we can cure scurvy by giving vitamin C.

That’s what the doctor (psychiatrist) did–put Dad on a lithium regimen for ~10 years. It did “cure” him for that 10 years, though the amount of LI he was given had to be adjusted periodically, depending on blood levels as well as on behavioral cues. You could tell by observing him whether his dose was too high (depression) or too low (wildly manic, even dangerous, behavior). Whether low lithium levels cause bipolarity, I don’t know, but LI is certainly used therapeutically to “cure” or control it. Dad had to stop taking it after ~10 years as it was damaging his kidneys by then. After a couple months of increasingly bizarre behavior, he had a psychotic break and was found wandering outside at 3 am, nude, “looking for God.” Then he was put in a geriatric psych ward near Ardmore for several months, where he was abused, punished by being locked in closets or beaten, over-drugged, etc. It was one of the worst experiences of my life and certainly of his. The stress of it all was too much for my mother, who died about a year later. When he was released he couldn’t walk, he refused to open his eyes, he wouldn’t talk, etc. We got him to a really good local psychiatrist who managed to treat him with a mix of other drugs pretty successfully, enough to control his see-saw mood swings and give him a decent quality of life.

This is a good resource. I’m not familiar with any of the brands, but maybe as people become more knowledgeable about lithium, we can import them? Or test our own water…

Yes, rather good resource.
This resource is what mineral water producers distributors provided, there a lot of mineral water sorts in it with provided only macroelement composition, but not microelement.
The same about several mineral waters of my country. Only macroelement composition is given. several years ago I wrote to four major producers about the lithium content in their waters. Two of them replied and gave lithium concentration in two water sorts, it was 0,13 and 0,07 mg/l.
