It’s hard not to feel sorry for him when the guy hits or pushes or otherwise thwarts him. Believe it or not, I’ve seen material about robotic rights–when you see one like this, it’s easy to see how such an idea could develop. Also plant rights, which generally is the right to produce seed to foster the continuation of the species. I’ll see if I can find the URLs.
The robot rights issue goes both ways–robots not being used for unethical purposes, for instance, is the main thrust of the Wiki article. But robot rights are also an issue, possibly in the future: “Robot rights are the moral obligations of society towards its machines, similar to human rights or animal rights. These may include the right to life and liberty, freedom of thought and expression and equality before the law.[2] The issue has been considered by the Institute for the Future[3] and by the U.K. Department of Trade and Industry.[4]
The other pro-robot stance is “Machine Ethics”: “Machine ethics (or machine morality) is the field of research concerned with designing Artificial Moral Agents (AMAs), robots or artificially intelligent computers that behave morally or as though moral.[21][22][23][24]”
I find it all very interesting, though I’d like to see human animals and non-human animals given their due rights too, and perhaps first.
Ya got me–I’m just reporting. Terry Pratchett, one of my favorite sci-fi/fantasy writers, has a whole sub-theme going in his Discworld books about robot rights, b/c they’re just on the verge b/tw life and machine. But I doubt we’ll see it in our lifetimes.
